What is the Application Service Provider (ASP) model for EHR?

In the ASP model, the EHR resides on a central computer housed by a hosting company (usually the EHR vendor) and is accessed via the internet. The Application Service Provider approach removes the necessity of setting up and maintaining the server environment as the vendor takes responsibility of this aspect. The ASP model is less expensive to deploy.
